How
Do I Give Proper Credit?
There are different ways to give others
credit for their words or ideas you have
used. Your teacher or librarian will tell
you which style of documentation to use.
However, it is helpful to gather the following
information for books, magazines, newspapers,
and Web pages when doing your research.
Books
First and last names of author(s)/editor(s);
title of the book; city of publication;
publisher's name; year published, and page
number.
Magazines
First and last names of the author(s); title
of the article; name of the magazine; date
of publication of that issue; the page numbers
on which the article appeared. If it's an
online edition of a magazine, then you should
also give the date you read it and the Web
address. You probably won't be able to supply
the page numbers.
Newspapers
First and last names of the author(s); title
of the article; name of the newspaper; date
of publication; the edition (if that is
mentioned); the page numbers on which the
article appeared (if it keeps jumping from
page to page, you can probably just give
the first page followed by a +). If it's
an online edition of a newspaper, then you
should also give the date you read it and
the Web address of the article itself. You
probably won't be able to supply the page
numbers, but you may be able to give the
name of the section of the newspaper.
Web
Pages Collect as much of the following
information as possible: first and last
names' of the author(s); title of the Web
page (it's safest to use what's at the top
of the page itself, not what your browser
puts up at the very top of the screen);
the date the page was created or revised;
the address, or URL; the name of the institution,
organization, or individual responsible
for the site (this might be a school, a
museum, a TV station, a newspaper, a company,
or simply a person); and the date you viewed
the page.
Also ask your teacher or librarian if you
can use BibBuilder 1.2 (Free MLA-Style
Bibliography Builder) http://jerz.setonhill.edu/writing/academic/bib_builder/index.html
